Do's and Don'ts for Lightning Protection
1. Go Inside. Take shelter in a home, large building or large metal frame building, all preferably lightning protected.
2. Avoid areas where you will be the highest object. If you are caught in an open field and you feel your hair stand on end drop to your knees, lean forward and crouch, with your hands on your knees. Do not lie down or place your hands on the ground.
3. Certain locations are extremely hazardous during thunderstorms. Avoid lakes, beaches or open water, fishing from a boat or dock, and riding on golf carts, farm equipment, motorcycles or bicycles. Take shelter in tunnels, subways, even ditches or caves if they are all that is available. Metal-top automobiles usually offer good protection.
4. If caught on high ground or in an open area, seek shelter in a low area and stay away from trees.
5. To avoid side flashes (sparks from a nearby struck object) stay clear of fences or isolated trees. Keep away from telephone poles, power lines, pipelines or other such electrically conductive objects.
6. At home, avoid using the telephone, standing near open windows or doorways, standing near metal piping, or watching and standing near the TV. Stay away from large metal objects such as plumbing, sinks and tubs, radiators and stoves. Also avoid using small electric appliances such as radios, toasters and hairdryers.
